Increase Transmission Capacity Support power evacuation from Rumaila IPP and meet growing regional demand.
Reduce Line Losses Improve electrical efficiency and reduce wasted generation.
Maximize Existing Infrastructure Upgrade capacity without building new transmission corridors.
Improve Reliability and Grid Performance Strengthen system performance in southern Iraq.
Capacity More Than Doubled. Increased current capacity from ~1,458–1,463 amps to 3,300 amps across both line segments.
Significant Increase in Power Transfer. Expanded capacity from ~1,010 MVA to ~2,286 MVA.
Reduced Transmission Losses. Achieved approximately $3 million in annual transmission loss savings.
Lower Mechanical Loading. Reduced stress on existing towers using a lighter composite core conductor.
The Rumaila IPP – South Nasiriyah transmission line is a critical route for delivering power from the Rumaila Independent Power Plant to load centers across southern Iraq. As demand increased, the requirement was to move more power through this corridor without the time and complexity of building a new transmission line.
The existing line was constrained by the thermal and mechanical limits of conventional AAAC and ACSR conductors. Increasing capacity using traditional approaches would have required significant structural upgrades or a complete rebuild.
To address this, Iraq’s General Company for Electric Power Transmission in the Southern Region reconductored approximately 136 kilometers of the existing 400 kV line across 292 towers using ACCC® Galveston 512.4 mm² Conductor.
This project represents an important milestone. ACCC® Conductor had previously been deployed in Iraq on 132 kV networks. The Rumaila IPP – South Nasiriyah upgrade marks the first successful application at the 400 kV level, demonstrating that the same reconductoring approach can be applied to higher-voltage, backbone transmission infrastructure.
