The EUCI Transmission Reconductoring and Capacity Expansion conference, held on February 26-27, 2025, in South Plainfield, NJ, brought together leaders and experts to discuss urgent grid modernization needs. Hosted at PSEG’s Hadley Road office, the event focused on expanding the U.S. transmission grid and addressing challenges like renewable energy integration and rising energy demands from AI data centers.
A key session was the Panel: Integrating Renewable Energy into Transmission Planning, which discussed the evolving regulatory landscape and its impact on transmission. Theodore Paradise from CTC Global highlighted how advanced conductors are crucial for accelerating grid expansion. These conductors improve power transmission efficiency over existing lines, reducing the need for new infrastructure, and aid in wildfire mitigation by withstanding extreme weather conditions.
Paradise also addressed the regulatory environment, noting that while federal regulations have evolved since 1920, their immediate impact on grid expansion remains slow. However, states like California and New York are actively implementing SB1006 mandates to encourage grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) like advanced conductors.
As industries such as AI data centers demand faster access to power, traditional 10-year transmission planning is no longer sufficient. Paradise stressed the need for more dynamic planning to meet these immediate demands. This shift is pushing for quicker deployment of advanced technologies like high-capacity conductors.
Looking ahead, Paradise discussed the near- and mid-term implications, emphasizing the importance of deploying existing technologies in the short term. Over the coming years, AI-driven solutions and smart grid technologies will play an increasingly important role in enhancing grid efficiency and responsiveness.
