Important technological advance in the Chilean electricity grid: project in the Metropolitan Region incorporates key innovations in transmission

A significant step towards the modernization and strategic management of electricity transmission assets is taking place in Chile’s Metropolitan Region, with the recent decision by one of the country’s leading power companies to implement state-of-the-art technology on one of its key transmission lines.

The company, which is of great relevance in the national electricity system due to its extensive coverage and strategic role in the distribution and transmission of energy, has selected the ACCC® Conductor to carry out a capacity increase project. This choice aligns with the need to respond to sustained growth in energy demand while maintaining superior standards of efficiency and reliability.

For this challenge, the company has relied on IMSA, an Argentine manufacturer with proven track record and quality, part of the network of suppliers certified by CTC Global, the entity responsible for the development and standardization of the ACCC® Conductor worldwide.

One of the most innovative elements of the project is the inclusion of the ACCC InfoCore® System, a technology that allows the structural integrity of the conductor core to be verified in all its phases: from manufacturing, through transport and installation, to commissioning. This non-invasive inspection capability adds a significant level of safety and control over the conductor’s condition throughout the asset lifecycle.

Complementing this solution, the company has decided to also specify the use of InfoCore anchor hardware, which will be provided by TAG, an international manufacturer based in India with extensive experience in transmission network solutions. This decision allows it to be possible to carry out re-inspections of the carbon fiber core even after the energization of the system, which represents a crucial advance in predictive maintenance.

The implementation of these technologies represents a milestone in the region, not only because of their technical impact, but also because of their innovative approach to transmission asset management. In an increasingly demanding environment, where events such as falling trees, vandalism or extreme weather events can affect infrastructure, the possibility of verifying the integrity of the conductor without the need for massive preventive replacements translates into operational efficiency, sustainability and cost reduction.

This project sets a positive precedent in the modernization of the Chilean electricity system, highlighting how the adoption of new technologies can strengthen the reliability and resilience of the grid in the face of the challenges of the future.
