On July 23, 2025, the White House released its America’s AI Action Plan, a national strategy aimed at securing US leadership in artificial intelligence, driving economic and scientific transformation, and building the infrastructure needed to support it all. One of the plan’s most urgent imperatives is to expand the U.S. electric transmission grid to meet the rapidly growing demands of the AI era.

The Action Plan describes AI as the first modern digital service that fundamentally challenges America’s ability to generate and transmit sufficient electricity. To compete in the global AI race, the U.S. must significantly upgrade its aging electric infrastructure and accelerate grid investments nationwide. That means not just building more power plants but ensuring we can move energy efficiently from where it’s produced to where it’s needed – especially to energy-intensive data centers, semiconductor facilities, and national security infrastructure.

A Clear Federal Call to Strengthen the Grid

The AI Action Plan lays out a three-part strategy for developing a resilient, scalable, and future-ready grid:

  1. Stabilize Today’s Grid – Safeguard existing assets and prevent premature retirement of reliable power sources.
  2. Optimize Existing Infrastructure – Use advanced technologies to upgrade power lines and increase the flow of electricity without building new corridors.
  3. Grow the Grid for Tomorrow – Expand capacity using smart, flexible, and high-performance solutions.

Supporting the Data Center Boom and AI Infrastructure Buildout

One of the most pressing challenges the AI Action Plan addresses is the surge in power demand driven by AI data centers. The White House recognizes that long interconnection delays, overloaded transmission corridors, and permitting bottlenecks are already stalling projects and threatening the broader goals of AI leadership.
