U.S. Senate Committee Discusses Reconductoring

During a recent hearing at the Committee on Energy & Natural Resources to discuss U.S. Department of Energy activities, Senator Martin Heinrich and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm discussed transmission challenges and the importance of reconductoring.

Senator Heinrich commented that “We are not building transmission fast enough…  It is the chief bottleneck for cleaning up our electric supply in this country… What is DoE looking at with respect to creating incentives for reconductoring existing transmission while we figure out how to build more transmission?”

Secretary Granholm replied “I’m so happy to hear you talk about reconductoring. I’m a huge believer in that since it doesn’t create the same ‘NIMBY’ problems that you might have in building new lines. So that technology through our grid deployment office, which was made possible through the bipartisan infrastructure law, there is a component of the funding that is toward grid improvements…”
