Future Proofing. Elia demonstrated that they are at the forefront of grid innovations to meet the future challenges associated with the energy transition.

Elia tackles energy network reliability with the ACCC InfoCore® System

One of Elia’s major projects is the upgrading of the Massenhoven-Meerhout-Van Eyck (MMVE) high-voltage (HV) overhead transmission line to enhance the capacity of a key connection in Belgium’s 380 kV transmission system. The MMVE line forms part of the backbone of Elia’s 380 kV transmission system, which efficiently transmits large quantities of electrical energy.

Advanced conductors such as CTC Global’s ACCC® Conductor play an important role here. These allow route capacity restraints and ground clearance issues to be addressed with minimal investments in the overall infrastructure required. As advanced composite-based technology generally requires little (if any) pylon strengthening, overall project costs associated with such conductors tend to be quite low. This advantage, coupled with the fact that the technology is associated with easier permitting procedures and long-term transmission efficiency gains of 25-40%, means that significant savings over the entire lifetime of ACCC® Conductors can be made when compared with traditional conductors.

“Improving our infrastructure is the most important requirement for enabling the energy transition.” – Jean Francois Goffinet

Additionally, the use of the ACCC InfoCore® System improved the project’s reliability and a safe, fast and inexpensive way of confirming that the ACCC® Conductor has been successfully installed. Elia requires the use of this technology during every installation that involves advanced conductors.

Jean-François explains: “We have tested InfoCore many times over the last two years, and we are seeing real-world results that indicate this solution is quick and reliable. This year, the system reached the performance levels we were expecting and we are quite satisfied with its maturity level. Now we are looking down the line at what is to come and are very excited by the planned developments we are seeing at CTC Global.”

The ACCC InfoCore® System now enables core integrity to be verified at any time after the conductor has been installed and dead-ended.

Project Highlights
  • Each inspection was performed in a few minutes. A key
advantage in the fast-moving field installation environments..
  • Allowed route capacity restraints and ground clearance issues to be addressed with minimal additional investment.
  • Alleviated grid congestion and ultimately will facilitate the current energy transition.
  • Improved Reliability. Elia in Belgium strengthened and maximized the capacity of their existing networks by introducing new technologies.

With big changes ahead for the energy sector, providers have work to do to ensure the resilience, affordability and efficiency of their networks. Elia remains at the forefront of grid innovations to meet the future challenges associated with the energy transition. To achieve this, Elia needs to collaborate with forward-thinking companies, such as CTC Global, to pioneer the implementation of new and reliable technologies on its network.
