Vietnam Grid Upgrade Demonstrates the Value of ACCC® Conductor in Challenging Conditions

As utilities around the world work to increase transmission capacity, improve reliability, and support growing electricity demand, reconductoring existing transmission lines continues to prove to be one of the fastest and most cost-effective modernization strategies available. Rather than constructing entirely new transmission corridors, utilities can often unlock substantial additional capacity by replacing conventional conductors with advanced conductor technologies while preserving much of the existing infrastructure.

A recent project in northern Vietnam provides another excellent example of this approach in action.

Upgrading an Existing 110 kV Transmission Line

The Nam Ninh – Nghia Hung 110 kV transmission line, owned by EVNNPC (Northern Power Corporation), was upgraded using 75 kilometers of Reykjavik size ACCC® Conductor manufactured by Dailong. The project involved reconductoring approximately 70 kilometers of existing single-circuit transmission line operating at 110 kV.

Rather than building an entirely new transmission line, the project focused on increasing the performance of an existing asset—an approach that helps utilities reduce project costs, shorten construction schedules, minimize environmental impacts, and accelerate the delivery of additional transmission capacity.

Designed for Challenging Installation Conditions

Although the line operates across relatively flat terrain, the project presented its own construction challenges. Portions of the route experience extremely wet ground conditions, making access and construction logistics more difficult than typical transmission projects.

The existing line consists of a combination of steel lattice towers and transmission poles with average span lengths of approximately 170 meters. Installation was performed using a BOYU TY1x30-44 tensioner, along with other Chinese and Vietnamese construction equipment.

The engineering, procurement, and construction work was completed by Truong Son JSC, with PLP InfoCoredead-end hardware providing the termination system specifically designed for ACCC conductor installations.

Like all advanced conductor projects, successful installation depends not only on the conductor itself but also on experienced installation practices and purpose-built hardware.

This project benefited from the expertise of CTC Global Master Installer Nguyen Van Truong of VTD, whose experience helped ensure that installation procedures were carried out in accordance with established ACCC Installation practices.

Upgrading existing transmission infrastructure has become an important strategy for utilities seeking to improve system performance without the time and expense associated with building entirely new transmission corridors.

In many applications, reconductoring existing lines allows utilities to achieve substantial capacity increases while minimizing impacts on existing rights-of-way and surrounding communities.

The Nam Ninh – Nghia Hung project joins a growing list of successful ACCC Deployments throughout Vietnam and around the world. With more than 225,000 kilometers of ACCC Conductor installed across over 1,600 projects in more than 70 countries, utilities continue to demonstrate how advanced conductors can help modernize existing transmission infrastructure quickly, economically, and with minimal disruption.

As electricity demand continues to grow, projects like Nam Ninh – Nghia Hung illustrate how reconductoring can play a vital role in delivering greater grid capacity while making better use of existing transmission assets.
