CTC Global co-sponsored and exhibited at the 2018 National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Winter Policy Summit in Washington DC, February 11-14.
Electric system resilience was the topic of several panels. ACCC, as a high performance conductor, delivers more capacity and higher efficiency than the ACSR conductor it replaces. Additionally, the composite core in the ACCC conductor is smaller, lighter and much stronger than the ACSR core it replaces. The stronger composite core has delivered increased resilience in real world conditions.
In one example, a U.S. utility had its ACCC conductor hit by a EF-4/5 tornado which stripped the outer aluminum conductor strands from the inner composite core. Fortunately the very strong ACCC composite core did not break which enabled very rapid repair. While the ACCC conductor offers greater capacity and improved energy efficiency, its toughness, strength and corrosion resistance help improve grid resilience.
