ACCC® Conductor Revolutionizes Bangladesh’s Southwest Transmission Grid Expansion Project

In a significant stride towards bolstering Bangladesh’s power sector, the Southwest Transmission Grid Expansion Project has embarked on a transformative journey with the selection of Advanced Composite Core Conductors (also known as Aluminum Conductor Composite Core – ACCC® Conductor). Endorsed by the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), this initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency and accelerate progress towards the government’s ambitious goal of providing electricity for all.

The scope of the project encompasses a multifaceted approach, including the construction of key infrastructure such as substations and transmission lines across strategic zones. Among the pivotal components are a 400/132-kilovolt (kV) substation in Gopalganj, a 230 kV transmission line from Barisal to Faridpur in the southern region, and a 400 kV transmission line spanning from Bogra to Rohanpur in the western zone. Additionally, the project entails the establishment of a 230/33kV GIS Substation at Char Fasson island, accompanied by a 230 kV double circuit transmission line linking the Bhola Nutan Biddyut Power Plant to the Char Fasson substation. Furthermore, existing transmission lines in the Northwestern part of Bangladesh will undergo ACCC® Reconductoring to optimize their performance.

Integral to the project’s success is the implementation of a capacity development program within the electric utility industry aimed at fostering socially inclusive growth and gender equality. By empowering stakeholders and enhancing their skills, this initiative seeks to fortify the foundations of Bangladesh’s power infrastructure and ensure sustainable progress.

The selection of ACCC® Conductors represents a paradigm shift in the realm of power transmission technology. These cutting-edge conductors boast superior power transmission capacity and significantly lower energy loss compared to conventional alternatives. By leveraging state-of-the-art materials and innovative design principles, ACCC® Conductors elevate the efficiency and reliability of transmission lines, thereby maximizing the project’s impact.

The rationale behind the Southwest Transmission Grid Expansion Project is deeply rooted in Bangladesh’s socioeconomic landscape. Despite facing formidable challenges, including the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, Bangladesh has emerged as a beacon of resilience and progress. With an average annual economic growth rate of 6.5% since 2007, coupled with a gradual transition from agriculture to manufacturing and services, Bangladesh stands on the cusp of middle-income status. The government’s commitment to inclusive growth, poverty reduction, and environmental sustainability underscores its dedication to advancing the nation’s prosperity.

The transformative potential of the Southwest Transmission Grid Expansion Project extends far beyond the realm of infrastructure development. By achieving the national target of electricity for all and reducing combined transmission and distribution losses from 13% to 9% of generation, Bangladesh is poised to unleash a wave of socioeconomic empowerment. Industries will benefit from uninterrupted power supply, driving productivity and competitiveness on the global stage.

As Bangladesh charts a course towards a brighter future, the selection of ACCC® Conductors for the Southwest Transmission Grid Expansion Project heralds a new era of innovation and progress in the nation’s power sector. With a steadfast commitment to excellence and sustainability, this endeavor embodies Bangladesh’s unwavering determination to realize its full potential and empower its citizens for generations to come. CTC Global is very proud to support these goals.
